  • Meta's co-founder, Mark Zuckerberg, criticized Apple's Vision Pro headset, highlighting that it offers no unique solutions and is significantly more expensive than Meta's Quest headsets.

  • The core visions of Meta and Apple differ, with Meta focusing on social interaction and immersive experiences in the metaverse, while Apple leans more towards augmented reality and content consumption.

  • Apple justifies the high price of the Vision Pro by emphasizing its top-of-the-line displays and powerful hardware, aiming to provide an all-in-one device that can rival iPhones and Macs in functionality.

Apple's recent announcement of its augmented-reality and VR headset, the Vision Pro, has generated significant interest within the tech industry. Priced at $3,500, the Vision Pro is considerably more expensive than Meta's upcoming Quest 3 headset. However, Meta co-founder Mark Zuckerberg expressed skepticism about Apple's offering during a company-wide meeting, highlighting the strengths of Meta's Quest headsets. In this blog post, we explore Zuckerberg's insights, examining the divergent approaches of Meta and Apple and their visions for the future of AR/VR.

Zuckerberg questioned the value proposition of Apple's Vision Pro, noting that it doesn't offer any "magical solutions" that Meta hasn't already explored. He pointed out that Apple's decision to prioritize a higher-resolution display and a metal design came with trade-offs, such as increased costs and the need for an external battery. In contrast, Meta has focused on affordability and accessibility with their Quest headsets, enabling them to bring people together through virtual reality experiences.

While Zuckerberg expressed optimism about Apple's entry into the AR/VR space, he highlighted a fundamental difference in their visions. Meta envisions the metaverse as a social platform, where users can create avatars and engage in new and immersive ways. On the other hand, Apple seems to be more inclined towards augmented reality, overlaying digital content in the real world. Furthermore, Apple's promotional videos featuring isolated individuals raised concerns for Zuckerberg, as it contradicts his vision of human connection and shared experiences.

Apple CEO Tim Cook defended the high price of the Vision Pro, stating that it incorporates the best displays and a powerful M2 SoC. Cook acknowledged that the headset's accessibility to the average consumer would be influenced by the global financial situation. Despite the hefty price tag, Apple aims to deliver an all-in-one device capable of performing tasks comparable to iPhones and Macs, while also providing gaming and productivity features.

Zuckerberg reiterated Meta's commitment to accessibility and affordability, emphasizing their success in selling tens of millions of Quest headsets. While Apple appears to prioritize content consumption and productivity, Meta's Quest headsets are designed with gaming as a primary focus. By emphasizing accessibility, Meta aims to ensure that their products are within reach of a broader audience, enabling more people to experience the potential of virtual reality.

During the meeting, Zuckerberg acknowledged the difficult decision to lay off around 21,000 employees at Meta. He expressed a desire to rebuild and evolve the company's culture during this period. Additionally, Zuckerberg shared Meta's plan to integrate generative AI into all their products, highlighting their dedication to leveraging advanced technologies for the benefit of their users.
