  • SoftBank and Oravel have formed a joint venture, Mountainia, to launch a premium hotel chain in India called 'Sunday,' focusing on 5- and 4-star hotels in Tier II cities.

  • While the venture's specific details remain undisclosed, it aims to redefine luxury hotel experiences in India.

  • Sunday's first hotel, Sunday Jaipur, located strategically in the city center, offers 90 rooms, a bar, restaurant, spa, and meeting spaces. The JV plans to open four more Sunday hotels in India by the end of 2023.

Japanese technology giant SoftBank and Oravel, the parent company of OYO, have joined forces to embark on an exciting venture in the Indian hospitality industry. This partnership has given birth to Mountainia, a joint venture (JV) with the ambitious goal of introducing a premium hotel chain in India. Under the brand name 'Sunday,' Mountainia is set to focus its efforts on establishing luxurious 5- and 4-star hotels in the rapidly growing Tier II cities of India.

Although the specific details of the venture's mission have not been officially unveiled, an insider close to the development has revealed that the collaboration is driven by a shared vision to redefine the luxury hotel experience for travelers within India. Despite the buzz surrounding this collaboration, none of the involved parties have issued official statements regarding this exciting endeavor.

The journey of Sunday begins with the inauguration of its flagship hotel in Jaipur, a strategically chosen location nestled in the heart of the city. The hotel's prime location offers guests easy access to key landmarks, including the airport and railway station, making it an ideal choice for both business and leisure travelers. Comprising an impressive inventory of 90 rooms, Sunday Jaipur aims to pamper its guests with an array of amenities, including a bar, restaurant, spa, and versatile meeting spaces.

The SoftBank-Oravel Stays JV is not content with just one hotel; their ambitious plans include the opening of four additional Sunday hotels by the close of 2023. According to insiders, the premium travel sector in India has been witnessing exponential growth, with discerning consumers showing a strong preference for high-end accommodations. Notably, the allure of non-metro first-tier and, more recently, second-tier cities lies in their unique blend of burgeoning affluence and a scarcity of competition in the premium hotel category, making these cities prime locations for the Sunday brand.

In terms of operational structure, the management of the Sunday hotel chain will be entrusted to Oravel, the JV partner, utilizing its established operational entity. On the financial front, capital investments will be coordinated by the joint venture itself. This partnership builds upon SoftBank's existing hotel JV with Oravel in Japan, known as Tabist, in which both partners hold a substantial 49.9% stake.
