IBM, a global leader in hybrid cloud and AI solutions, has joined forces with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), backed by the Ministry for Electronics and IT, to propel high-performance computing (HPC) in India. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) between these entities marks a significant milestone towards fostering growth within India's developer community. With a keen focus on processor and system design, firmware development, and application creation, including contributions to open-source initiatives, this collaboration aims to invigorate India's technological landscape.


One of the key objectives outlined in the MoU is the promotion of IBM's Power processor for HPC applications across various sectors, including startups, MSMEs, research organizations, and academic institutions. Through the establishment of an HPC working group, IBM and C-DAC seek to bolster competency and ecosystem building in HPC design research, spanning the entire technology stack for processor development. This initiative will encompass guiding startups and companies, supporting co-development and innovation efforts, and conducting capacity-building workshops and design reviews for implementation partners.


Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Electronics & IT, and Jal Shakti, emphasized the transformative potential of semiconductor technology in reshaping industries. Chandrasekhar outlined India's vision to become a semiconductor hub, focusing not only on manufacturing but also on chip and IP design across various sectors. He highlighted the strategic importance of RISC V and IBM's Power architectures in this endeavor, envisioning them as the foundation for numerous applications, including microprocessors and IoT devices.

Sandip Patel, Managing Director of IBM India & South Asia, underscored the growing demand for HPC solutions, particularly in light of accelerating AI adoption. The collaboration between IBM and C-DAC aims to create an enabling environment conducive to fostering indigenous processor development, thereby advancing India's digital transformation and economic growth.
