AI will disrupt the global job market, but it will also create new avenues of employment, according to OpenAI founder Sam Altman.
Altman emphasized that AI will make workers more efficient and lead to a productivity boom, generating numerous new opportunities.
Altman called for adaptation, retraining, and regulation to address the challenges and risks associated with AI and ensure its benefits are realized.
During a recent interactive session organized by The Economic Times in New Delhi, Sam Altman, the founder of OpenAI, delved into the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the global job market. Altman acknowledged that while AI may render certain jobs obsolete, it will also generate new employment opportunities. Drawing parallels with the Industrial Revolution, he emphasized that the speed at which these new jobs will emerge requires changes in the socioeconomic contract and governmental perspectives on the AI landscape.
Altman highlighted that AI will significantly enhance workers' efficiency and enable the IT industry to produce three times more software to meet global demand. Contrary to initial expectations, AI is not merely replacing physical labor jobs; it is also augmenting cognitive labor and creative roles. Altman underscored the positive influence of AI, asserting that it will create wealth and lead to a surge in productivity, ultimately resulting in the creation of numerous new prospects for individuals.

While experts and critics have expressed concerns regarding job displacement due to AI adoption, Altman stressed that each technological revolution brings changes to the job market. He emphasized the need for individuals to adapt and undergo retraining to align with evolving job requirements. Altman also called upon global leaders to regulate the AI industry, particularly major players such as Google and OpenAI, in order to address the associated risks of AI systems.
During the session, Altman discussed the exponential progress of AI and its potential future capabilities. He expressed optimism that future AI systems could revolutionize sectors such as education and healthcare. However, he cautioned against becoming overly enamored with robots and stressed the importance of AI serving as coaches and therapists to aid individuals in their self-improvement journeys. Altman emphasized OpenAI's commitment to mitigating risks associated with AI and ensuring that society reaps the benefits of this transformative technology.
Altman's visit to India as part of his multi-nation tour highlighted the remarkable strides the country has made in the field of AI. He commended India's approach to national technology, recognizing it as a valuable asset in their AI strategy. Altman expressed confidence in the potential of AI to cater to multilingual markets like India and emphasized the significance of addressing the ethical and serene deployment of AI, which remains a significant challenge for the global community.
