  • Wipro's HR Officer emphasizes the importance of upskilling for IT professionals amidst an economic slowdown and reduced hiring.

  • Salary increases in the industry are now contingent upon individuals' efforts in upskilling and reskilling themselves, rather than significant pay hikes for new hires.

  • Wipro aims to automate HR functions to allow HR professionals to focus on strategic initiatives and talent development while resolving 80% of queries through bots.

Wipro's Chief Human Resources Officer, Saurabh Govil, has recently provided insights into the company's expectations from its employees and its hiring plans. In response to the current economic slowdown and reduced hiring, Govil emphasized the importance of upskilling IT professionals. While salary increases in the industry have stabilized, he highlighted that future increments will depend on individuals' efforts to upskill and reskill themselves. This blog explores Wipro's strategic shift and its implications for employees.

According to Govil, the era of significant pay hikes for new hires is behind us. In 2021, high attrition rates and abundant opportunities led to individuals being hired at premiums as high as 30%. However, the landscape has changed, and niche skills such as generative AI and cybersecurity now command a premium. Govil emphasized that employees who demonstrate expertise in these areas will be eligible for higher compensation.

Wipro aims to automate a significant portion of HR functions, allowing HR professionals to take on coaching roles for managers and focus on team building and management. Govil outlined the company's vision to have 80% of queries resolved through bots. By streamlining administrative tasks, HR professionals can concentrate on strategic initiatives and play a more significant role in talent development and employee management.

While remote work became the norm during the pandemic, Govil shared Wipro's expectation that employees will return to the office. Existing employees who have been working from home are asked to come into the office three days a week, while some individuals may need to work five days a week. Unlike other tech giants, Wipro has not made working from the office mandatory, allowing for some flexibility.

Despite the push for returning to the office, many employees remain hesitant, citing productivity and convenience as reasons to continue working remotely. Govil acknowledged these concerns but emphasized the importance of in-person collaboration and the unique value it brings to the organization. While the company continues to encourage employees to work from the office, it recognizes the need for a balanced approach that considers both individual preferences and business requirements.

Recent reports have revealed that Wipro has hired 92% of freshers at a reduced salary of Rs 3.5 lakh per year, compared to the original offer of Rs 6.5 lakh per year. This adjustment reflects the changing market dynamics and the need for cost optimization. However, it is important to note that the company remains committed to recognizing and rewarding employees who enhance their skills through upskilling initiatives.
