  • According to reports, Elon Musk is establishing an AI business to rival OpenAI's ChatGPT.

  • In addition to securing hundreds of graphics processing units from Nvidia Corp., Musk has put together a team of AI researchers and engineers.

  • With his new AI company, Musk will face off against OpenAI and other industry behemoths like Google and Microsoft.

The ChatGPT manufacturer, OpenAI, is facing competition from billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, who is creating an artificial intelligence (AI) firm. The Financial Times reports that Musk is putting together a team of AI academics and engineers and is in discussions with investors about funding the new business alongside SpaceX and Tesla. Musk will join other tech goliaths like Google and Microsoft in developing next-generation AI with the creation of the new AI firm.

According to the article, Musk obtained hundreds of graphic processing units from Nvidia Corporation, which fuels the powerful computation needed for AI and advanced graphics jobs. On Friday, the news increased the shares of the chip manufacturer.

This information was made public a short while after Musk and a group of AI academics and executives, including himself, requested a six-month hold on creating systems with greater computing capacity than OpenAI's GPT-4 due to possible societal concerns. While a European privacy watchdog established a task group as a first step towards a unified policy for AI, Italy has outlawed ChatGPT due to privacy concerns.

As part of his aspirations to develop an "everything app" under the "X" brand, Musk registered a business called X.AI on March 9 and listed himself as the only director. He also changed the name of Twitter to "X Corp" in company documents. If this company is associated with Musk's rumored AI start-up initiatives is unknown.

OpenAI, which was founded as a non-profit organization in 2015, includes Musk as one of its co-founders. In 2018, he resigned from the board of the business. Yet, he will face direct competition from OpenAI once his new AI business launches. Several businesses, including Microsoft Corp. and Google Inc., are attempting to incorporate ChatGPT's generative AI technology into their products.

In conclusion, considering his history and experience in the industry, Elon Musk's rumored intention to found an AI startup that would compete with OpenAI's ChatGPT is not unexpected. How his new business would do against competitors already in the market is yet unknown. Nonetheless, the action shows rising interest in AI and its potential to transform sectors and the global landscape. Yet as with any new technology, innovation must be balanced with prudence and forethought to ensure that its advantages are achieved without jeopardizing society's safety and well-being.
