Tata Group-owned Air India has signed purchase agreements with Airbus and Boeing for a total of 470 aircraft, marking one of the largest orders in civil aviation history.
The order includes 250 Airbus aircraft and 220 new Boeing jets, valued at $70 billion, as part of Air India's fleet renewal and expansion program.
The deal follows a historic order by IndiGo for 500 aircraft from Airbus, further emphasizing India's prominence in the global aerospace market.

The significance of Air India's deal is further highlighted by the fact that it comes just a day after Indian airline IndiGo made history by ordering 500 aircraft from Airbus. Initially announced in February 2023, Air India's order had already been the largest ever placed by the number of aircraft. However, IndiGo's order raised the stakes even higher.

The Aircraft Breakdown:
Air India's firm orders include 70 widebody planes, consisting of Airbus A350-1000s, Airbus A350-900s, Boeing 787 Dreamliners, and Boeing 777Xs. Additionally, the airline has ordered 140 Airbus A320neo, 70 Airbus A321neo, and 190 Boeing 737 MAX narrowbody aircraft. The company has also secured options to purchase an additional 70 planes from Boeing, including 50 737 MAXs and 20 787 Dreamliners.
A Game-Changing Order:
The deal not only solidifies Air India's position but also puts India in the spotlight at the Paris Air Show for the second consecutive day. By finalizing the agreement, Air India's order joins the aerospace industry's order backlogs as firm orders, marking a significant milestone for the company. However, experts caution against over-ordering, especially considering the challenges faced by manufacturers due to supply chain disruptions.
Looking Ahead:
With this historic order, Air India is set to receive deliveries of the first A350 aircraft later this year, while also expanding its fleet and network through the introduction of Airbus A320s and Boeing 777s.
