Why Two Mumbai Teens Quit Stanford To Start A Grocery Delivery App?

In today’s blog we will be having a closer glance at a very innovative startup Zepto

What is Zepto?

Zepto is a start-up based on Data Analysis and Visualization. It is a delivery app that provides your groceries to your doorstep in just 10 mins. Amazing! Isn’t it?

  • Many won’t have time to go out and buy groceries in this busy world. Kaivalya Vohra and  Aadit Palicha found this loophole and filled it with Zepto.
  • The headquarters of the company are in Asia-Pacific and are legally named Zeptolytics.

What does Zepto do?

  • Zepto has largely operated in stealth mode until today and launched its app six months ago, it’s the talk of the whole town for months.
  • They set up dark stores at various places in India.
  • The dark stores which the start-up has set up are designed and optimized for fast deliveries.
  • Zepto has assembled avengers that include former executives from Flipkart, Uber, Dream11, Pharmacy, and Pepperfry.
  • The founders mentioned that they’re ignoring the noise and executing heads down for a long time to make this model perfect

How does Zepto delivery work?

  •  Zepto has secured $60 Million from investors. Nexus, Y Combinator, Glade Brook Capital, and other individual investors Manik Gupta, Lachy Groom, and Neeraj Arora, amid others infused in the company.
  • Up to 90 percent of the orders were delivered in an average of 8 mins 47 secs with the help of dark stores and warehouses.
  • This start-up works on a hub-and-spoke model through a network of dark stores or retail distribution centers.
  • You must’ve got a question about ‘What a dark store is? ‘ A dark store is a small neighborhood warehouse where customers can’t enter directly and can only order online for home delivery.
  • The magic of this model is how they pack and dispatch goods in under 60 seconds.
  • Zepto claims its network is better optimized with the use of location intelligence and geospatial data including geography, demography, road patterns, traffic dynamics, the last mile supply availability, real estate prices, etc.

Plans of Zepto

  • The way they’re growing right now, and the current penetration and frequency of usage they’re watching, the app is also just massive.
  • This start-up plans to soon expand to Hyderabad, Pune, and Kolkata and grow the number of dark stores. It has to be over 100 by early next year from 40 currently.
The idea for Zepto is, however, borrowed from KiranaKart. As the name suggests, KiranaKart too was a grocery delivery platform. It had tied up with Kirana stores to deliver groceries within 45 minutes. What are your takes on this? Would you invest in Zepto?
